Burford Luster – Commission

Private Collection Burford, Oxforshire

Site responsive painting, made in relation to both historical figures from the local town and the architecture of the house. The painting was based on C17th portraits of Nell Gwyn and the Earl of Burford but as the title suggests it moves away from direct portraiture. ‘Luster’ refers to the materials sensitivity to light, it allows the figures to shift creating an ephemeral depiction of both bodies. Making full use of the residential aspect of the location, the painting changes drastically in evening light. The oils take a backseat as the natural copper glows in artificial lighting.
